Rimé Prayer

For the Flourishing of the worlds wisdom
“For each ailment there is a medicine. If a path is not suitable for one, it will definitely be suitable for another. This is the essence of Rimé philosophy.”

THE RISING SUN THAT WELCOMES A GOLDEN AGE OF PEACE AND HARMONY

An Unbiased Aspiration for All Wisdom Traditions

By Shar Khentrul Rinpoché

A non-sectarian prayer paying homage to all of the major traditions of the world and making aspirations for their authentic wisdom to flourish in this world.

By the immeasurable wisdom and compassion of the newly arisen sun, that ripens sentient beings’ potential for love and compassion, may devotion to all of the supreme guides of peace and harmony blossom like a lotus grove of benefit and happiness.

In the boundless expanse of infinite stars above, countless sentient beings are constantly searching for satisfaction. I pay homage to the protectors and guardians who have all appeared in accordance with the potentials and inclinations of diverse individuals.

I honour the stainless and unobstructed knowledge that knows all things, including the sky and the earth; the mountains and the rocks; the rivers and the oceans; consciousness and primordial awareness and the elements of very subtle phenomena—minute particles and hidden energy.

I honour the non-dual primordial wisdom of subjects and objects; that which is described by a diversity of words and all objects of the mind—the wide variety of appearances that are naturally approaching the truth.

In particular, I honour all of the wise holders of the excellent assemblies [of teachings] that have arisen from the Ancient Wisdom Traditions—the original guardians and protectors who have brought great benefit and happiness to the beings of this world.

I honour the diverse Brahmanic Traditions of the Noble Land [of India]—whether proclaiming doctrines of gods or no-gods, through their practices of faith, devotion, morality, tolerance and perseverance, they are able to live in harmony with each other.

I honour the holders of the ancestral traditions that believe in one God who created the universe. I pay homage to all of this world’s major traditions—Such as Judaism from Moses, Christianity from Jesus and Islam from Muhammad.

I honour those who possess the profound view that does not posit a creator, the pure conduct of non-violence and strong morality. Renowned in the snowy land as the ‘Naked Ones’, I pay homage to the Tirthankaras of Jainism and especially the supreme Mahavira.

I honour the religious traditions of mainland China such as Taoism, the system of view and conduct presented by Laozi, as well as the philosophical system of Confucius. To all those who are worthy of praise, with great sincerity, I bow down.

I go for refuge to the supreme teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, The lineage that focuses on the excellent teachings of the Common Vehicle—Such as the Sixteen Arhats and the noble Arya Sangha. Please grant your blessings!

I honour the tradition of the Theravada, the fundamental support for the complete Common Vehicle, spreading far and wide throughout the six regions of Jambudvipa into manifold countries of both the East and West.

I pay homage to [the Two Supreme Ones of the Mahayana]—Asanga and Nagarjuna, as well as to the Six Ornaments that beautified this world, and all of the many translators and scholar-practitioners who spread the [teachings] into countries such as China.

In particular I pay homage to the Four Roots and the Eight Branches of Chinese Buddhism such as Ch’an, Pure Land, The Flower Garden School and the White Lotus School.

From there the transmission spread to Japan, Korea and Vietnam. These eastern lineages of the Mahayana teachings were known by names such as Zen and Nichiren. I pay homage to all those responsible for the spread of the Mahayana.

The ancestral heritage of Tibet—this Yungdrung Bön of Tonpa Shenrab, the mysterious and profound doctrine of awareness; with great devotion and self-confidence, again and again I offer prostrations to this wealth of treasures.

I honour the common [teachings of Sutra] together with the uncommon [teachings] of Tantra that spread from India to the Land of Snow Mountains in the North—[Lineages] such as the NyingmaKadamMarpa KagyuPath and Its ResultPacification and SeveranceVajra YogasShangpa Kagyu and Approach and Accomplishment.

How wondrous are the Nyingma! The Kama, Terma, Mind Transmissions and Pith Instructions; Dharma of the Nine Successive Vehicles having Six Unique Qualities; The Ati Yoga Lineage of the Lake-Born Vidyadhara—The Rainbow Body that is liberated by the radiant Vajra Tent.

I honour the Sakya, whose boundless logic and reasoning defeats wrong views with a vajra-like power. Their view of non-grasping raises up the Buddha’s superior teachings of One-Taste, and through their power and influence they brought Tibet together in solidarity.

I honour the four main and eight branches of the Kagyu, holders of the lineages for attaining union in a single lifetime; the teachings for accomplishing the unmatched Mahamudra from the essential instructions of the supreme adepts of India.

I honour the glorious Jonang who hold the secret and profound methods of Shambhala, the meditative state that unifies the true self of Immutable Great Bliss with the beautiful display of Empty-Form—the swift path that transforms the physical body into its pure essence.

I honour the Geluk, whose investigative study uses logic and reasoning to bring forth an ocean of excellent explanations and a large monastic community. Clarifying the Vehicle of Cause and Effect, they embrace both the worldly and the Dharma of Tibet.

I honour the many Dharma Holders and their Traditions who faultlessly spread the different teaching lineages of Tibet to Mongolia, Bhutan, Sikkim and all of the Himalayan regions.

I praise all of the Buddhist and Bonpo Rimé Masters, especially those who revealed the unbiased teachings such as Jonang Kunga Drolchok, Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo and Jamgön Kongtrul.

In particular, I praise all those like His Holiness, the Great Fourteenth, who are endowed with a genuine motivation and know the essential uniqueness of this world’s Dharma. May I obtain a way of seeing that accords with all unbiased wisdom traditions.

I honour all of the learned sages who cause [the teachings] to flourish. By seeking the natural state of phenomena, we will know the true benefit of this great level; [then with] new emanations, by guiding [others] in the benefits of practice, we will gain the magnificence of joy and bliss.

May I pacify all low self-esteem, laziness, unconsciousness, delusion, ignorance, wrong views and doubt; May I manifest pure faith, diligence and devotion, with genuine respect for all those with pure minds of joy.

By developing the perception that is free from limitations, may all bias be eliminated so that peace and harmony can pervade in this world. By giving rise to the authentic equality of such a Golden Age, may we experience the glory of the Sublime Realm of Shambhala.

Just as the Buddha prophesied in the Kalachakra Tantra, due to the power of the aspirations of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, our pure motivation and the unfailing truth of interdependence, may we experience the Second Golden Age.
