About Us
HOLDER OF THE JONANG KALACHAKRA FOR 20 YEARS IN AUSTRALIATemple History
The Tibetan Buddhist Rimé Institute (TBRI) was founded by Khentrul Rinpoche in 2005. Rimé means “non-sectarian” and is unusual within Buddhism. Rimé Institute offers profound and extensive teachings from all Tibetan Buddhist traditions, including Mahayana and Tantrayana.
In addition, we specialise in the teachings of the Jonang tradition which includes the Zhentong Madhyamaka view and the Kalachakra Six Yoga practice. It is rare to encounter either of these doctrines outside of Tibet itself, and both are said to play an important role in the future of Buddhism and world peace.
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, there is a particular emphasis on the importance of an authentic spiritual lineage. The aims of the Rimé Institute are very closely connected to the aspirations of Rinpoche’s root teacher, the great Lama Lobsang Trinley, who was one of the most exceptional and highly realised Buddhist masters of the last generation. It was his wish that the pure Kalachakra Tantra and the precious Amitabha Sutra teachings from his lineage be spread to the West.
AN UNBIASED VIEW
Our temple was founded to help teach, uphold and transmit the Rime view in Australia.
Khentrul Jamphel Lodro Rinpoche is a rime master. ‘Rime means a ‘non-sectarian’ or ‘non-biased” view. While some people may think this is related to the idea of all systems being equal, it is actually focused on recognizing the value and benefit of multiple points-of-view. Khentrul Rinpoche wrote rime book titled Ocean of Diversity that includes all the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as well as many of the religious traditions alive in our world today. We work to cultivate an unshakeable and genuine respect for pluralistic traditions seeing the value in all faiths. We are inclusive and welcome practitioners from all backgrounds.
Our Spiritual Director
Shar Khentrul Jamphel Lodrö Rinpoche is a renowned Jonang Kalachakra Scholar and buddhist Rimé master. He was originally born in the mountain ranges of the Golok region of Tibet. After taking full ordination, he studied and practiced with more than 25 teachers from all of the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions, earning himself the title of “Rimé Master”. He was later officially recognised as the reincarnation of the great masters Lama Ngawang Chözin Gyatso and Ghetse Khentrul. When he was chosen to be a teacher (khenpo) of the prestigious Tsangwa Monastery in Dzamthang, Rinpoche chose to renounce his position though in favor of dedicating himself to strict practice.
Holder of the Jonang Kalachakra
The Jonang are the core holders of two important lineages. The Zhentong Madhyamaka philosophy is recognised by many of the most realized masters as being the highest understanding of emptiness. The Jonang is the only Tibetan Buddhist school to emphasize this unique doctrine. The Kalachakra Tantra is the most comprehensive and effective system within Tibetan Buddhism. The Jonang is the only tradition that holds the entire Kalachakra system, including the unique completion practice known as the “Six Vajra Yogas”
