Teachings on the Sakya Tradition with HE Rigzin Chenpo
At the request of Khentrul Rinpoche, His Eminence Kathog Rigzin Chenpo will give five days of profound teachings on the extraordinary history and unique views of each of the five main traditions of Tibetan Buddhism—Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu, Jonang and Geluk.
The second tradition that that we will explore in this series is the Sakya Tradition which was the first major tradition to have arisen during the period of the Later Transmission and was originally founded by the great Khön Konchok Gyalpo. The leadership of the Sakya has been maintained within the bloodlines of the Khön family, being passed from father to son or from uncle to nephew.
The unique characteristic of the Sakya tradition is that they are the main lineage holders for the system of practice known as the Path with the Result (lamdre). This system based on the Hevajra Tantra, originated with the accomplished Indian master Virupa and was brought to Tibet by Drokmi Lotsawa. The teaching lineage became known as the Lamdre for Assemblies, and provided the foundational teachings for developing the view in accordance with sutra. The practice lineage was passed down in extreme secrecy and became known as the Lamdre for Disciples. It provided the unique practices for actualising the view in accordance with tantra.
